MOTS-C is a  relatively recently discovered mitochondrial-derived peptide that has  gained significant interest in metabolic and anti-aging research. Origin: (Mitochondrial Open Reading Frame of the Twelve S rRNA-c) is a 16-amino acid peptide encoded in the mitochondrial DNA. Discovery: It was first identified in 2015 by researchers at the University of Southern California. Function:  It is considered a  mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP) that acts as a mitochondrial  signaling molecule, influencing various metabolic processes. Proposed Effects:Regulation of metabolic homeostasis Potential improvement in insulin sensitivity Possible enhancement of exercise capacity Potential role in reducing age-related metabolic dysfunction Possible neuroprotective effects Mechanism of Action: It is  thought to work by activating the AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase)  pathway, which plays a crucial role in cellular energy homeostasis. Research Status: Most studies have been conducted in cell cultures and animal models. Human studies are limited and ongoing. Potential Applications:Treatment of metabolic disorders like type 2 diabetes Potential anti-aging interventions Possible therapeutic for age-related cognitive decline Potential enhancement of exercise performance and endurance Regulatory Status: MOTS-c is not approved as a drug by major regulatory agencies. It’s primarily used in research settings. Comparison to Other Peptides:  Unlike many other peptides we’ve discussed, MOTS-c is unique in being  derived from mitochondrial DNA rather than nuclear DNA. Ongoing Research: Current  studies are exploring its potential in various areas of metabolic  health, aging, and exercise physiology. It’s important to note that  while MOTS-c shows promise in metabolic and aging research, its effects  and safety profile in humans are not fully established due to limited  comprehensive clinical trials. As with other experimental peptides, its  use outside of controlled research settings carries potential risks and  unknowns. The research still in  relatively early stages compared to some other peptides, and much  remains to be learned about its full range of effects and potential  therapeutic applications.
